It is a six-hour drive from Arusha, and only three hours from Mto wa Mbu, a central location for safari-goers coming from the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Manyara. And for the more daring, it is undoubtedly the physically challenging ascent of the Mountain of God.Įngare Sero, the small authentic Masai village, is the ideal base for excursions to Ol Donyo Lengai & Lake Natron. For some, it is the hike to the local waterfall, a green oasis in a desert setting. Maybe it is the admiration for the Maasai who bravely herd their flocks in this inhospitable area as they have done for centuries? It could also just be their sacred mountain, Ol Doinyo Lengai, a unique active volcano that erupts at regular intervals. What makes this place so magical? There is the salt lake with its flamingos, up to one and a half million of them. This destination is the ideal complement to a safari, guaranteeing adventure away from the crowds in a unique & authentic setting. However, we too have lost our hearts to this place.

It is difficult to describe in words why a visit to this region is for so many people the highlight of a trip to Tanzania.

Surrounding the lake is a large number of volcanic implosion craters, numerous waterfalls and ravines, an archaeological site, Maasai bomas, and the famous Ol Doinyo Lengai, also known as the ‘Mountain of God’.Far from the crowds, in a seemingly uninhabitable area, you will find the splendour of Lake Natron & the sacred mountain of the Masaai: Ol Donyo Lengai. The surface of Lake Natron, which has high salt, magnesite and sodium carbonate concentration, is covered with a pinkish-white soda crust. Lake Natron covers an area 56 km long and 24 km wide. Lake Natron is the only active carbonatite volcano in the world and the dramatic scenery of the soda lake is often described as having a desolate and almost lunar splendor. Lake Natron is located in the Arusha region of Tanzania and is home to ancient hominid footprints, the largest breeding ground for lesser flamingo, and to Ol Doinyo Lengai.
